Bethanie Brandon is a textile designer who lives in Lucas Valley, California. She began her career at Philadelphia University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Textile Design, and went on to work as a textile and clothing designer in New York and San Francisco.
After the birth of her daughter in 1990, Bethanie decided to stay at home and put her artistic and business skills to work. She opened a studio and within a year was designing, producing and selling a line of high-end wearable accessories and home accents.
Inspired by the washed silklike fabric that she discovered in an out of the way shop in San Francisco, Bethanie had begun applying metallic paints in neo classical scrollwork and winding, vine and leaf designs around the borders of what would become flowing scarves and elegant table runners. Her work has since expanded into luxurious, feather-filled pillows, throws, duvet covers, ponchos and sarongs. The bulk of her line consists of this sensual, tactile fabric, which is actually a double weight rayon with a smooth sueded finish.
When Bethanie and her husband took a year long sabbatical through Asia and Europe, she became fascinated with the ancient Mediterranean and Hispanic artifacts that would inspire her designs. The hues of Italy, particularly Venice and Assisi, are reflected in her color story and fabric textures. Images from rural Japan and Nepal inspired the designs in the ASIA and ZEN groups. Her most recent inspiration has been the mid century modern architecture and furniture by which she is surrounded in her Eichler designed community. She also absorbs inspiration from the hills surrounding her home, the sea and the northern California hiking trails that she frequents.
Bethanie's designs make use of a combination of techniques, which include hand painting, print, resist, and silk screen. The paint is applied to the fabric and heat set before the pieces are sewn. Each piece is made to order, some finished with gold cording and covered buttons, and signed by Bethanie.
Bethanie's work is exhibited at “The San Francisco Museum of Craft and Design,” “Scheuer Linens,” “Sawbridge Studios” and over 75 other galleries and stores. She exhibits annually at the American Craft Council Shows in Baltimore and San Francisco. Her work has also appeared in Canada, Brazil, Taiwan and England.
